Welcome - Painting Holidays

Previous Holidays - What people said   |   Leisure Painter - Holiday of the Month  |   Art Materials - Live Exhibition

You will be assured of a warm welcome from all of us at the Cheddar Gorge and Mendip Hills Painting Holidays.

We have a variety of courses throughout the year with some of Britain's top artists who are well known for their books, DVDs, TV Programmes and magazine articles and have a wealth of experience in tutoring on painting holidays. We intend to provide a diversity of courses for all abilities in a variety of mediums in a superb location with lovely accommodation.

Details of the holidays are displayed on the website for you to choose the most suitable for you and profiles of each artist so you can see who most suits your style. There are also some photos of the painting locations to illustrate the stunning scenery that we have in and around Cheddar.

There are details of the two hotels where the courses are situated, both of which have studios if we need to paint inside. Lyncombe Lodge nestling on the slopes of the Mendips has glorious views and the Penscot Inn is in the heart of the Mendips and has plenty of charm and character.

The three ingredients of experienced tutors, beautiful locations and lovely accommodation add up to a truly enjoyable holiday. You will be looked after by the tutors, the hotel staff and of course us as we believe in making every effort to ensure you have a relaxing time. Here are just a few comments that people have made on last year's holidays.

Painting Holiday Guests

Non-Residential Courses

Where space permits most of the courses can be attended by local people on a non-residential basis. Evening meals can be provided at an extra charge.

Short Breaks

If you want to try a course but are unsure about coming for all 4 or 5 days then why not just come for 2 or 3 days. If spaces are available we can provide for short break options within some 4-5 day courses. This is subject to the course being run and numbers for this are limited.

The available options are for 2 or 3 day breaks. It is advised that beginners come at the beginning of the course and not the end. Available days are normally either at the beginning or at the end of the course. For example, if you want to come for 3 days on a 5-day Mon-Fri course you could come on Mon-Wed or Wed-Fri.

Leisure Painter - Holiday of the Month - September 2008

"This is what Leisure Painter magazine said about us in their September 2008 edition"

  Art Materials Live Exhibition

Cheddar Gorge Painting Holiday stand

We have a stand at the Art Materials Live Exhibition at the NEC (5th-8th November 2009) again where we are promoting our holidays. Why not come along and see us there as we have Joe Francis Dowden demonstrating for us on Friday. This year we have a free painting holiday draw where :-

"You could win a Free 5 day all inclusive residential painting holiday or art materials worth up-to £100"

We will have some artists' work on display who tutor for us including a selection of original paintings, demonstration work, their DVDs, books and magazine articles from Leisure Painter, Paint Magazine and others. Many artists such as Charles Evans, Tim Fisher, Jeremy Ford, Keith Fenwick and Steve Hall will pop along when they have a spare moment in between working on their own stands.

We were at the exhibition last year, see photo above. (This was before the exhibition and I can assure you it didn't look this tidy when the artists were demonstrating!).

Joe Dowden Watercolour

Last year on Friday Joe Francis Dowden was demonstrating his techniques of capturing water and light in watercolours. (See the pictures he painted on the left of this page) He had a number of his sketches on display and a number of people were asking him questions.

On Saturday Becky Samuelson demonstrated pen & wash of a picture of Lion Rock, Cheddar Gorge and was talking to people as she painted.

On Sunday we had Steve Hall producing a couple of demonstrations and about half a dozen of those that came on his holiday met up to watch him demonstrate and catch up with each other since the holiday and had a laugh!

Also on Sunday, Joanne Thomas did a couple of demos in between times showing how to paint buildings in the landscape and was answering questions as she painted. (See the pictures she painted on the right of this page).
